Chapter 7

Paul called bright and early Christmas morning to wish Katherine a very merry Christmas. “Merry Christmas, darling. How are you doing today?”

“I am wonderful, sweetie. Just taking my time this morning, relaxing by the fire and enjoying my cup of coffee. You?”

“Mom is already hard at it in the kitchen, she wants to have everything ready before we leave for the hospital at noon so she can take Dad a plate to enjoy. I am not sure the nurses will allow him to eat it, but at least he will get to enjoy the smell if they don’t.” He chuckles. “Then we will enjoy her hard labor when we return and I plan on spending the rest of the afternoon with you.”

“Oh, Babe, that’s so sweet of you, but I don’t want you to ignore your family. We will get to see each other when you return tomorrow or the next day.”

“I know, honey, but I want to spend as much time as I can with you on this our first Christmas together.”

“Me too honey, I am looking forward to snuggling up with you on the phone this afternoon and chatting away the evening.” She tells him.

“Good.” says Paul. “Until then honey, I will be counting the minutes.”

Katherine gets ready and heads to the shelter. She wants to get there early and help get everything set up and plans on staying for just a little while after lunch to help clean up, but wants to hurry home so she won’t miss Paul’s call. Lunch goes smoothly and time just seems to fly, so fast that she doesn’t get to people watch much. However, she does notice the young lady with the three small children, one only a few months old, a little boy probably no more than 5 or 6 and a little girl about 3, Katherine would guess. She also notices that she is trying hard to hide any evidence of her black eye and the cut on her lip. When she asked them what they wanted on their plates, the little boy just looked at his mother as if he was afraid to ask for any food and Katherine heard her tell him “Its okay honey, you can eat. You won’t get in trouble here.” It nearly broke her heart to see a child that was afraid to eat for fear of getting in trouble or worse. So she put a little of everything on their plates, trying as best she could to make sure that today they would not go hungry. And when she brought around the dessert a little while later, Katherine made sure there was a little extra ice cream on their pumpkin pie. Glancing at the mother as she set their plates down, and the mother said “thank you,” Katherine could see so much more in her eyes. Before Katherine realizes it, it is past 2 pm so she says her goodbyes and heads out the door.

After taking Bart out, she decides to take a long, hot bath, get comfortable and wait for the call from Paul.
